Introducing the Mighty Shirley!

Meet Shirley—a powerful Gyr x Saker Falcon, a 50:50 hybrid of two incredible birds of prey. As a hybrid, she brings the best of both worlds in terms of strength, speed, and adaptability.

Shirley has recently joined our team at Tora's Falconry with a very important job: pest control. Using birds of prey to control pests is becoming increasingly popular, and for good reason—it’s environmentally friendly. Rather than using harmful poisons or chemicals, we let nature do the work. The goal isn’t to kill, but to deter. By flying a natural predator in areas populated by pests like pigeons, seagulls, and corvids, we can humanely discourage their presence.

Now, as you can imagine, tackling seagulls is no small feat. They're bold and persistent, which is why we often deploy larger falcons or hawks for the job. And that’s where Shirley comes in. Not only has Shirley been specially trained for this kind of work, but she’s also quite the powerhouse—making her perfectly suited for the task. For now, we’re focusing on "manning" her again, helping her bond with us and adjust to her new environment. Once she’s settled in, we’ll get her back in the air and ready to work.

Although she may not be part of our experiences or demonstrations just yet, you’ll definitely get the chance to meet her. We’ll be bringing her along so everyone can admire her stunning plumage and calm, majestic nature.
